The dangers of sulfuryl fluoride (SO2F2) are very real in the fumigation industry. SO2F2 is a highly toxic fumigant, used to control a number of pests in a wide range of agricultural and horticultural crops. It is an odorless, colorless gas that can cause fatalities, particularly when someone enters a building being fumigated or that hasn’t been properly vented afterwards. Its primary applications are for quarantine treatment, soil fumigation and post-harvest protection of a variety of grains.
The Uniphos team is knowledgeable on the risks of SO2F2 and has developed a portable monitor to effectively measure the gas.
The FumiSpec Lo by Uniphos is a portable monitor based on infrared (IR) technology to measure sulfuryl fluoride (SO2F2) in the 0-100 ppm range. The long path length IR bench provides accurate results in the low ppm levels. The FumiSpec Lo design is ideal for daily use for leak detection using a sampling probe, personal monitoring and environmental monitoring while working in atmospheres where sulfuryl fluoride may be present.
The Fumispec Lo sulfuryl fluoride monitor uses the non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) technology, which is a very sensitive and specific technology. The gas sensor consists of a broadband ceramic IR source and IR detectors fitted with wavelength selective filters. The inner surface of the gas cell is coated with gold for increased life of the sensor. NDIR sensors often have a service life in excess of five years, making them one of the most reliable sensor technologies for gas detection.
